The number is real data, but it is not the whole product
I record THCA percentage in every flower audit because it helps identify the sample and compare the label with the certificate. I do not use it as a shortcut for freshness, aroma, cure, contaminant testing, value, or the reliability of the seller’s claims.
That is not an anti-potency position. It is a pro-context position.
A laboratory tests a sample
Flower is not a perfectly uniform manufactured sheet. A laboratory receives a sample, prepares it, and measures it under a defined method. The result belongs to that tested material. Representative sampling and homogenization are essential precisely because cannabinoid concentration can vary within plant material and because preparation affects the analysis.
USDA’s hemp-testing guidelines require grinding a composite sample to improve homogeneity and require laboratories to report measurement uncertainty for production testing. Those requirements are a reminder that “27.14%” is an analytical result, not a description of every trichome in a jar.
Different laboratories can produce different results
NIST created its Cannabis Laboratory Quality Assurance Program to improve comparability and competence across labs. In its large Exercise 2 report, between-laboratory variability for THCA measurements ranged from 9.6% to 21.6% across plant samples, with method and calibration issues among the possible contributors discussed by the authors.
That does not let sellers dismiss any inconvenient result. It does mean readers should resist pretending that a one-point difference between two product listings is automatically meaningful. My COA-reading workflow checks method, laboratory, units, and batch before comparing numbers.
Regulators are worried about lab shopping
California’s Department of Cannabis Control has publicly described “lab shopping” as a practice in which businesses may seek the most favorable results, including higher potency or a passing contaminant outcome. A 2026 regulatory proposal is aimed at reducing opportunities to create multiple samples from one batch and select among results.
California’s regulated market is not identical to the national hemp market. The lesson still travels: incentives can shape which result reaches the shelf. A responsible review should examine the paper trail instead of rewarding the largest headline automatically.
Moisture changes the comparison
Percent by weight depends on the basis of the measurement. Water content and dry-weight reporting influence how concentrations are expressed. That is one reason I check whether two reports use the same basis and why package condition still matters in a hands-on review.
I also separate potency from storage. Heat, light, oxygen, and time can change cannabinoid and volatile profiles after testing. The report is a snapshot; the product arriving months later has had a life since that snapshot. My flower storage guide covers what controlled studies actually support.
The quality questions potency cannot answer
A THCA percentage cannot tell me whether the package is underweight, whether the flower is brittle, whether aroma vanished in storage, whether the batch report matches, whether pesticides or metals were included in the testing scope, or whether a seller made promises the evidence does not support.

My buying-page takeaway
I would rather see a traceable 22% batch with a current, readable, appropriately scoped report than a 35% headline attached to an old or mismatched PDF. The number belongs in the review. It just does not get to be the review.
